Clashes between protesters and police enter 2nd day in Conakry

Xinhua, April 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Violent incidents were witnessed on Tuesday morning in Conakry's Ratoma commune, as anti-riot police used tear gas to disperse protesters, just a day after violent protests that left many people injured, local sources said.

In a statement released on Monday evening, the Guinean government said at least 10 people had been injured, six of them with gun shot wounds. It added that at least eight protesters were arrested.

However, the opposition said police had shot and killed Soulemane Bah, one of the protesters, and at least 30 people had been injured and admitted at various medical centers in the capital.

Monday's protests were called by the opposition to protest against insecurity currently being witnessed in the country. The situation degenerated into clashes between protesters and security forces.

The opposition later called on its supporters to continue with the protests on Tuesday until all their demands are addressed satisfactorily.

Other grievances outlined by the opposition in a statement issued on Monday evening included rampant corruption, impunity, discrimination and electoral fraud. Endi
