Iran urges halt to military operations against Yemen: spokeswoman

Xinhua, April 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Iran called on Monday for an end to foreign military intervention in Yemen and the start of political talks among all parties involved in the conflicts, semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Marzieh Afkham, foreign ministry spokeswoman, rejected Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal's recent remarks about Iran's intervention in Yemen's domestic affairs, saying that it is the Saudi-led coalition that has been targeting innocent lives and infrastructures in Yemen and is heedless of international calls for stopping air strikes.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, based on its principles, requests halt to all types of military operations against Yemen and stresses rapid dispatch of humanitarian aid missions to the country," she said, adding that Saudi Arabia's "continued military attacks would only complicate the problems in Yemen."

Political solutions and all-inclusive internal talks is the sole path to settle the disputes, which could result in the establishment of a "national unity government" in the Arab state, she added.

Tensions have been running high between Iran and Saudi Arabia following air strikes by the Riyadh-led coalition against Shiite Houthi group in Yemen, which had made significant advances to control major cities in the country.

The Saudis and its allies in the Gulf region have accused the Islamic republic of arming and financing the Houthis, an accusation denied by Tehran. Endit
