2nd LD Writethru: Gun shots heard in Guinea protest

Xinhua, April 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Gun shots were heard on Monday as anti-government protest turns violent in the Guinean capital Conakry.

Guinea's opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo said the country's opposition will intensify its protest movement on Tuesday.

The opposition protested against the government's electoral timetable and insecurity.

After having expressed his satisfaction with Monday's protests that were organized by the opposition against insecurity in the country, Diallo hailed the determination of opposition supporters who, he said, had turned out massively for the protests.

Even some public servants chose to remain in their homes to avoid violence.

Incidents of violence were reported in Ratoma suburb, considered as an opposition stronghold, where gun shots were heard.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Xinhua said a number of people among protesters in this Conakry suburb were arrested.

Reacting to the opposition protests, Guinea's presidential camp said it had taken note of the protests and insisted that the "state will exist" in spite of the protests. Endi
