A roadside bomb planted by Taliban militants in the southern Zabul province on Monday had killed two policemen and injured another; while government forces had killed 12 Taliban fighters since Sunday.
"A police unit was on routine patrol in Sangar Manda locality of Shahr-e-Safa district, Zabul province when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb at around 8:30 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) . Two policemen were killed and another injured," the district governor Malik Ali Mohammad told Xinhua.
The official blamed the attack on the Taliban militants who are active in parts of the province over the past couple of years.
The Taliban insurgent group has intensified activities since the Afghan national security forces assumed the full security responsibility of their country from NATO-led troops on Jan. 1.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Interior Ministry said a dozen Taliban fighters were killed across the conflict-ridden country since Sunday.
"Units of police backed by the army have killed 12 Taliban militants during series of operations across the country over the past 24 hours," said the ministry said in a statement.
During the operations conducted in Faryab, SariPul, Jowzjan, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Logar, Kapisa, Khost, Paktika and Helmand provinces, five more militants have been wounded and two others arrested, the statement added.
The ministry, however, didn't say if there were casualties on security forces. The Taliban militants fighting the government have yet to make comment.
