PSV close in on Dutch league title

Xinhua, April 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

PSV are one win away from their first Dutch championship title since 2008 after booking their 25th win of the season in the 30th match round of the Eredivisie.

The Eindhoven-based club beat PEC Zwolle 3-1 at home on Friday. Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring in the 12th minute and after the equalizer by Maikel van der Werff, PSV distanced themselves in the second half.

With a smashing volley from outside the penalty area Joshua Brenet gave PSV the lead again and Luuk de Jong sealed the victory in injury-time. With the win PSV came on 76 points after 30 matches and this meant that a loss by Ajax on Saturday at Heracles Almelo would earn PSV the championship.

However, Ajax made no mistake. The reigning champions defeated Heracles 2-0. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored from the rebound after a free-kick by Ricardo van Rhijn was stopped by Heracles goalkeeper Bram Castro. Substitute Lucas Andersen curled in the 2-0 four minutes from time.

Ajax are 10 points behind PSV in the standings with four match rounds remaining. PSV can capture the title with a home win over sc Heerenveen next Saturday. With an eight-points deficit with number three Feyenoord Ajax are on their way to the second place.

Feyenoord drew 2-2 at Willem II on Sunday. Elvis Manu put Feyenoord in front, but the home-team bounced back through Freek Heerkens and Bruno Andrade. Thanks to Colin Kazim-Richards Feyenoord left Tilburg with one point.

The Dutch champions will directly qualify for the Champions League, the number two gets a ticket for the Champions League preliminary round and the number three a direct berth in the Europa League preliminary round.

Vitesse climbed to the fourth place on Saturday after beating Excelsior 3-1 in Rotterdam. AZ dropped to the fifth place after a 5-2 loss at sc Heerenveen. Endi
