Nigeria to re-position female soccer team ahead of FIFA World Cup

Xinhua, April 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria is set to re-position its senior national football team ahead of the FIFA women world cup slated for June, in Canada, with the hope of achieving better results at the tournament, the coach said.

In spite of Friday's massive 8-0 victory over their Malian counterpart in the second leg qualifying match for the 2015 All Africa Games played in the Nigerian capital Abuja, Nigeria's women soccer team, also known as Super Falcons, can still be better, said Coach Edwin Okon.

Nigeria's Super Falcons have dominated women's football on the African continent since the African Women's Championship (AWC) was first staged.

"The team is still in construction in spite of currently being the African champions," Coach Okon told Xinhua in an interview.

Nigeria will play in Group D of the world cup, against USA, Australia and Sweden. The West African nation's best performance was at USA 1999 when they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Brazil after finishing second in their group

The 2015 edition of women world cup is Nigeria's seventh appearance in the tournament, having qualified for each previous edition of the competition.

"We cannot go to the world cup to merely add to the numbers, but we are going there to participate and to prove a point. I cannot say right away how far we will go at the tournament, but I am positive we won't disappoint Nigerians when hostilities start in Canada. We have quality and experienced players in our midst who can turn things around," Asisat Oshoala, Nigeria's striker and Africa's best female footballer in 2014, said. Endi
