Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, April 10

Chinese stocks surged to new highs on Friday, with the Shanghai Composite Index climbing above the key benchmark of 4, 000 points at closing for the first time since early 2008.

The Shanghai Composite Index finished at 4,034.31 points, up 1. 94 percent, or 76.78 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index gained 1.57 percent, or 216.6 points, to close at 14,013.33 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses amounted to 1.27 trillion yuan (about 206.45 billion U.S. dollars), lower than the 1.50 trillion yuan the previous trading day.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Friday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) advanced 28.89 points, or 1.40 percent, to 2,087.76 at the close. Trading volume stood at 647.11 million shares worth 6.28 trillion won (5.74 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed up 0.51 percent on Friday with the weighted index up 49.66 points at 9,617.70, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 91.18 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 2.92 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 554.03 points on Friday, up 3.51 points, or 0.64 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 104.201 million shares worth 1.994 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (92.95 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 123 stocks went up, 85 stocks fell down, while 73 stocks remained unchanged.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 328.00 points, or 1.22 percent to 27,272.39 points on Friday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,812.75 and 27, 373.68. Turnover totaled 221.15 billion HK dollars (about 28.42 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.93 percent higher on Friday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 74. 79 points to 8,127.48. The all-share index went up by 25.28 points, or 0.55 percent, to 4,635.38.

Trading volume reached 1.51 billion shares worth 8.52 billion pesos (191.46 million U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 82.98 points on Friday, up 0.61 points, or 0.74 percent, against the previous closing session.

A total of over 42.688 million shares worth around 520.798 billion Vietnamese dong (24.39 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Friday, an increase of 8.01 percent in volume and 5.66 percent in value against the previous closing session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished slightly higher on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 12.08 points, or 0.35 percent, to close at 3,472.38.

A total of 2.70 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 31 billion Singapore dollars (963.2 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,844.13, down 5. 08 points, or 0.28 percent, and the Emas was at 12,662.46 down 24. 79 points or 0.20 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.86 billion shares valued at 1.80 billion ringgit Malaysia (490.66 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.80 billion shares valued at 1.79 billion ringgit Malaysia (492.71 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 9.56 points, or 0. 17 percent, to a level of 5,491.34 on Friday.

Some 200,980 transactions were booked, involving 5.83 billion shares worth 5.31 trillion rupiah (about 411.62 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Friday moved up 2.72 points, or 0.18 percent to close at 1,547.83 points.
