Nikkei briefly hits 20,000-point line on earnings optimism

The Nikkei stock index in Tokyo stocks market briefly hit 20,000-point threshold by opening the trading Friday for the first time since April 17, 2000 as sentiment here was boost by optimism over corporate earnings.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock average inched up 0.36 point, or 0.00 percent, from Thursday to 19,938.08.

On the contrary, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 4.25 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,589.94. Endi
