UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has appointed six experts to conduct an independent assessment of the system of administration of justice at the United Nations, with the assessment report to be reviewed at the 71th session of the General Assembly in 2016.
The establishment of the panel, consisting of Jorge Bofill ( Chile), Chris de Cooker (Netherlands), Bob Hepple (United Kingdom), Hina Jilani (Pakistan), Navanethem Pillay (South Africa) and Leonid Skotnikov (Russian Federation), is based on a General Assembly's resolution in December 2014, said a UN spokesperson in a statement on Thursday.
According to the resolution, the panel shall examine the system of administration of justice in all its aspects, including an analysis of whether the aims and objectives of the system are being achieved in an efficient and cost-effective manner, said the spokesperson. "The Assembly has also encouraged the resolution of workplace disputes through informal means whenever possible," said the spokesperson.
The experts were selected to ensure the independent nature of the assessment, taking into account geographical representation and gender balance, with a broad mix of expertise, such as knowledge of internal UN processes and intergovernmental legislation, as well as knowledge of internal UN labor dispute mechanisms and judicial experience.
The panel is expected to start work in April 2015. Endite
