Nikkei almost hits 20,000-point threshold by break on earnings optimism

Tokyo shares continued its uptrend by ending the morning session Thursday with its benchmark Nikkei index almost hit the 20,000-point line on Japanese corporate earnings.

The 225-issue Nikkei index gained 127.66, or 0.65 percent, from Wednesday to 19,917.47, after briefly hit as high as 19,946.78, the highest intraday level since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.96 points, or 0.25 percent, to 1,592. 43. Endi
