The appeals chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague on Wednesday confirmed the sentence of life imprisonment for former Bosnian Serb general Zdravko Tolimir.
In December 2012 Tolimir was sentenced to life in prison for crimes committed during the Bosnian War.
He was held responsible for the mass executions of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995 and the forcible displacement of thousands of civilians from the two enclaves Srebrenica and Zepa. The appeals chamber judges now confirmed Tolimir's conviction for genocide.
The appeals chamber partly reversed Tolimir's 2012 conviction, such as his conviction for genocide by means of inflicting conditions of life calculated to destroy the Muslim population of Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole. The appeals chamber confirmed that the Bosnian Muslims of Zepa were, along with the Muslims of Srebrenica and Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, the victims of genocide.
The now 66-year-old Tolimir was assistant commander and chief of the sector for intelligence and security affairs of the main Staff of the Bosnian Serb Army. He reported directly to Bosnian Serb Army commander Ratko Mladic, currently still on trial at the ICTY.
On May 31, 2007, Tolimir was arrested and his trial started on February 26, 2010. Endi
