The Pentagon on Wednesday confirmed that one American soldier was killed and several wounded during an possible insider attack by an Afghan soldier in Afghanistan.
"I can confirm that one American soldier was killed today," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren told reporters, adding that initial evidence pointed to a possible insider attack by an Afghan soldier turning his weapons against NATO troops.
"It's a little early to tell. Indications are leaning that way, " Warren said. "But we need to let a little more information come out first."
Earlier on Wednesday, Resolute Support, NATO-led international military coalition, said in a statement that one NATO service member was killed Wednesday without identifying the nationality.
"A visiting NATO-led military official team was leaving the compound at around midday. An Afghan soldier opened fire at their vehicle. During the exchange of fire the attacker was killed and one Afghan soldier was wounded," an Afghan security official earlier told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The source said it was still unknown what had prompted the attack, but Afghan soldiers and police force have earlier attacked NATO-led forces before.
In January, three foreign contractors with the NATO-led forces were killed after an Afghan soldier shot at a military airport in the capital of Kabul.
The U.S. and NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role, which focuses on training, advising and assisting Afghan forces since Jan. 1, 2015. Endite
