Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Jesus "Chuy" Garcia of the Cook County Board of Commissioners both made their final moves in the campaign for mayor as voters headed to the voting booth on Tuesday.
The polls have recently shown a 16-point gap between incumbent mayor Rahm Emmanuel and challenger Jesus "Chuy" Garcia. A poll conducted by Ogden & Fry on March 21 asked 951 Chicago voters who they would vote for, 48.5 percent said they would support Emmanuel, while 32.1 percent said they would support Garcia. Another 18.4 percent remain undecided. The poll has a margin of error of 3.24 percent.
Garcia began his day by shaking hands with voters at various Chicago public transit stations, as well as greeting students at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In a one-on-one interview with Xinhua, Garcia said "I think the winds of change are blowing, and we'd like to be part of it."
"I'll be a mayor that's in tune with what's going on in the city, I'll have the disposition to go into the neighborhoods and sit with people and hear them out. That's something that's rarely happened, especially under this administration," he said.
Mayor Rahm Emmanuel visited his campaign office then went to eat with voters at Manny's Deli, a restaurant just west of Chicago 's downtown Loop area. In a press conference, he told Xinhua, " This is the election that counts. There's no do-overs, no second runs at this, one person is going to emerge as mayor for four years."
Emmanuel's campaign recently took a more inclusive tone with its advertising, and the mayor echoed that spirit on Tuesday, "You hear from people constantly things that they're working on, or things that they would like to make sure you're working on," he said. "Those are the voices and the concerns that you have to take with you in office, and they become your north star."
Polls in Chicago are set to close at 7:00 p.m., and the results are expected later in the night as Mayor Emmanuel holds his election night party at the Chicago Plumbers Local 130 Union Hall and Garcia is holding his event very close to the University of Illinois-Chicago campus. Endite
