Indonesia to redefine environment commitments prior to Paris COP 21

Xinhua, April 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Prior to this year's UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, also known as the Conference of Parties (COP) 21/ Meeting of Parties (CMP) 11, later this year, Indonesia planned to redefine its commitment in environment preservation, a senior official said here on Tuesday. "Indonesia needs to prepare well for the COP21/CMP11 summit so as to assure results of COP 21 would not contradict to national interests. We should not present there as a participant only. We need to change our development paradigm to address environment issue before getting there,"said Arif Yuwono, a senior official supervising climate change issue in the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

Speaking on the sidelines of a coordination meeting to prepare the nation's presence in COP21, Arif said that change of paradigm was essential to match different views in addressing environment issues and reaffirm the nation's joint commitment to move forward.

He added that embracing domestic parties considered competent in environment issue was also an essential option to enhance the nation's environment commitments.

As a UNFCCC party country, Indonesia has conducted several activities aimed at minimizing impacts of emission, among others, by reducing emission resulted from glass house effect. Indonesia has implemented national action plans in doing so, he said, adding that such an effort has been actively participated by the public and private sector.

Other activities conducted in Indonesia were to train people in several areas in adapting themselves to the impact of climate change. Indonesia has also developed National Communication mechanism to address progress of the activities that would eventually be reported to the UNFCCC.

In its mid haul development target from 2014 to 2019, Indonesia has set target to see emission reduction approximately reach 26 percent by its own efforts. Besides, Indonesia also planned to strengthen the resiliency of 15 areas across the country identified to be the most prone to impact of climate change by 2015.

Indonesia has set target to see emission reduction by 26 percent by its own efforts and 41 percent with foreign assistance by 2020.

COP21/CMP11, scheduled to be held from Nov. 30 to Dec.11, will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate change, applicable to all countries with the aim of keeping global warming below 2C. Endi
