Russia hopes UN Security Council to support "humanitarian break" in Yemen

Xinhua, April 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russia hopes the UN Security Council would agree upon the introduction of "humanitarian breaks" in Yemen, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

Lavrov told reporters that such a halt is necessary as ongoing Saudi-led military airstrike pose risks to the evacuation operations as well as to safety of civilians.

Russia has submitted to the UN Security Council a draft resolution on introduction of "humanitarian pauses in Yemen," while the Council said Saturday that it is working on the Russian proposal.

While calling on all relevant parties to stop violent actions in Yemen, the minister urged other countries to join the evacuation mission. Russian aircraft have already airlifted more than 600 people from the war-engulfed Yemen, including Russian citizens and nationals of other countries.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has also called for a 24-hour pause of violence to bring in humanitarian aid and medical help for the Yemeni people.

The security situation in Yemen began to deteriorate sharply in early March, when conflict erupted in several provinces in the country's southern regions and has killed more than 500 people. Endite
