At least six people were dead and five others went missing on Monday when a boat with illegal migrants sank in western Turkey, private Dogan news agency reported.

The wooden boat capsized in the Aegean Sea near Kurucabuk region of western Turkey's Mugla province, said the report, adding that rescue efforts are underway.

Nine people including Syrians and Iranians were rescued, said the report.

Turkey is geographically positioned between Asia and Europe, making it a major transit point for Middle Eastern and Asian migrants and refugees fleeing poverty or conflict in their home countries. Endit
