Over 300 families badly affected by cyclone in NE Indian state

Over 300 families have been badly affected as their houses suffered damage during a cyclonic storm from Saturday night to Sunday morning in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, said local media Sunday night.

The cyclone hit the state's South West Garo Hills district, with high velocity winds, accompanied by rain and lightning, rendering many families homeless and uprooting hundreds of trees, telephone and electric poles in the district bordering Bangladesh, the Indo-Asian News Service quoted officials in the state capital Shillong as saying.

However, there has been no report of any death or injury caused by the storm, according to the report.

During the storm, around 50 villages were severely hit and another 150 villages suffered damages of various degrees.

A team of officials has been sent to the affected area to assess the damage, according to the report.

Over two dozen people were killed in the cyclone on Sunday morning in neighboring Bangladesh which borders the northeast Indian state. Endi
