The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women's Championship 2015 is set to kick off in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City in May, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) said on its website on Friday.

The tournament will see the participation of eight teams from Australia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and hosts Vietnam. They have been divided into two groups, with Group A including Australia, Indonesia, Laos and Thailand, and Group B having Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The eight teams will play under the round-robin format, with the top two teams of each group entering the semifinals.

Vietnam's national women football team, with 1,630 points, retained the 34th position in the Federation of Football Associations (FIFA)'s latest ratings. It ranks second in Southeast Asia after Thailand with 1,651 points.

The AFF Women's Championship was launched in 2004, hosted by Vietnam and won by Myanmar. Vietnam has hosted the event for five times including the 2015 tournament.

So far, Myanmar and Vietnam each has won the trophy twice.

In the previous tournament held in 2013 in Myanmar, Japan claimed the title after beating Australia 5-3 in the penalty shootout, while Vietnam and Myanmar were placed third and fourth respectively. Endi
