Last Cuban health staff in Sierra Leone return home

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The last 64 Cuban medics sent to Sierra Leone last year to help in the fight against Ebola have returned to their country, local media reported Thursday.

They are the second group of Cuban medical workers who came back from African countries hit by Ebola. On March 23, Cuba withdrew the first group of 150 health staff from Sierra Leone and Liberia.

All these medics will go through a process of surveillance and control in a medical center, which is established in Cuba for all the people arriving from countries affected by Ebola.

Following the appeal of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the World Health Organization, Cuba sent over 250 doctors and nurses to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea in October 2014.

Authorities of these African countries and international organizations have acknowledged the major role of Cuban doctors, not only in treating Ebola, but also in its prevention. Endi
