Liberians vote to change certain clauses of Constitution

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Delegates at the Constitutional Review Conference currently convening in Gbarnga, central Bong County voted in favor of reducing the tenure of the President and Representatives from six to four years while opting for a reduction from nine to six years for Senators.

The delegates, drawn from all sectors of the country, also voted no to dual citizenship and non-negro descendants becoming citizens of Liberia.

Another key issue they also voted against is the dual currency regime where the United States dollars is a legal tender in the country.

They further voted for propositions which call for the election of superintendents, commissioners, mayors and chiefs.

Furthermore they voted for respect and recognition of persons with disabilities to be enshrined in the constitution to protect their interest.

The delegates voted against the propositions that the Chief Justice be elected and that the vice president should not preside over the Senate because of the principle of separation of powers.

The propositions were gathered through consultations in all the 73 electoral districts across the country.

Meanwhile, voting on the remaining 12 propositions continues Thursday.

The exercise will consequently be followed by a referendum during which all citizens are expected to vote in favor or against these proposals. Endi
