Two policemen injured in firing on polio team in Pakistan's Karachi

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two policemen were injured when some unknown gunmen opened fire at a polio team in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Thursday afternoon, local media reported.

The policemen were escorting the polio team when they came under attack, Urdu TV channel Dunya said.

The workers of the polio team were safe in the attack while the injured policemen were shifted to a nearby hospital

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Pakistan is among the only three countries in the world where polio virus has not be eradicated yet.

Last year an estimated 246 cases f polio were registered in the country which was a 14-year high and more than double the total for the whole of 2013.

The polio-eradication campaigns in the country have been badly affected by the militants who launch attack on the polio teams and threaten parents from allowing health workers to administer polio vaccine to their kids.

An estimated 80 workers have been killed in separate attacks by militants on polio teams since December 2012. Endi
