Afghanistan voices support for Saudi Arabia in security

Xinhua, April 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The government of Afghanistan would stand alongside Saudi Arabia if the Kingdom faces security threats, said a statement released here by the Afghan Presidential Palace on Wednesday night.

"The government and people of Afghanistan have deep rooted historic and religion relations with Saudi Arabia and therefore stands alongside the people and the government of the kingdom to defend it in case of emergence of any threats," the statement added.

The Afghan government announced support to Saudi Arabia amid ongoing political turmoil and fighting in Yemen where a Saudi-led coalition has been pounding Houthis positions over the past several days.

The stance adopted by the Afghan government has been taken in the light of a joint meeting of national Security Council, national figures and religious scholars wherein the situation of the region with particular reference to Yemen were discussed.

In the statement, the Afghan government stated that Afghanistan supports the legitimate government in Yemen and stresses for political solution to the crisis there and therefor calling upon Islamic countries to take necessary steps in this regard in coordination with the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).
