Germany's women soccer coach Silvia Neid to retire

Xinhua, March 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Silvia Neid allows her contract to expire before German international Steffi Jones will take the helm in September 2016, the German Soccer Association (DFB) confirmed at a press conference on Monday.

The World Cup winning coach Silvia Neid will make way for the former German international Steffi Jones, who will take the reins in September 2016.

"My decision to allow my contract to expire is now clear for some time. I don't want to retire; I want to try something new. I have always felt a great appreciation and now I am looking forward to a new task," Neid said.

From September 2016 on, Silvia Neid will fill the position as DFB's director of the scouting department for women's and girl's soccer meanwhile Steffi Jones, who played for many years under Neid, will take the reins of Germany's women's national squad.

"I am very pleased with the confidence of the DFB. I am aware that the job as the national coach brings a great responsibility," Jones said.

Neid joined Germany's women squad as assistant coach in 1996 before she took over in 2005 as the head coach. She lifted overall, as head and assistant coach, two FIFA World Cup titles (2007, 2003) and five UEFA European Cups (2013, 2009, 2005, 2001, 1997).

However, for now, the preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada have priority. Endi
