Nigeria postpones poll in northern council due to security challenges

Xinhua, March 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday postponed elections indefinitely in 18 polling units in restive northeast council of Giedam in Yobe state due to security challenges.

State Resident Electoral Commissioner Habu Zarma told reporters in Damaturu, the state capital that security challenges in the council area had scared staff from going to conduct election in the affected units on Saturday and Sunday.

Elections could not hold in those areas on Saturday and Sunday due to security challenges, he added, noting that the commission will meet to consider the position of the affected units.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections were conducted peacefully in other council areas on Saturday across the state. Endi
