The international community should promote respect, openness and inclusiveness to create sound atmosphere for people with different ethnic, cultural or religious background to coexist in equality and harmony, said a Chinese envoy here on Friday.
Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks at a Security Council open debate on the victims of attacks and abuses on ethnic or religious grounds in the Middle East.
Noting that the Middle East has a wide range of ethnic communities and is one of the regions with the best diversity of human civilizations, Liu said when it comes to civilization, there is no superiority or inferiority to talk about.
"Inclusiveness brings about coexistence; exclusiveness brings about hatred," he said.
He urged the international community, including the UN, to advocate exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations so as not to leave any crack for terrorism and extremism.
Terrorism is the common enemy of mankind, and combating terrorism requires solidarity, synergy and coordination of the international community, he added.
"There should be no double standards in counter-terrorism," he said. "Furthermore, there should be no linkage between terrorism and specific ethnic or religious communities."
Liu also said the international community, the UN in particular, should strengthen their efforts on the international development agenda and actively assist the Middle East countries in developing economy and eradicating poverty.
"Poverty and under-development are the major root causes for conflicts and terrorism," he explained.
Through improving people's livelihood as well as improving governance and capacity-building for self-development, the international community can help people in the Middle East achieve peace and prosperity, thus removing the breeding ground for terrorism, he added.
The Security Council held the open debate under French presidency following the recent tragic events in which Christians in the Middle East were targeted by the groups affiliated to the Islamic State. Endite
