1st LD: Yemeni president arrives in Egypt for Arab summit

Xinhua, March 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Yemeni President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi arrived in Egypt's resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh on Friday to attend an Arab summit, the Egyptian state TV reported.

At the airport, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi welcomed Hadi, who fled the Yemeni southern seaside city of Aden to Riyadh on Thursday evening after the Shiite Houthi fighters were closing in on the city to capture him.

Violence and chaos prevailed in Yemen since the Houthis captured the capital Sanna earlier this year, and forced President Hadi to flee the capital to Aden.

Earlier on Thursday, a Saudi-led Arab coalition launched airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Before that, Yemeni Foreign Minister Riyadh Yassin called for an anti-Houthi Arab military action to defend legitimacy in the turmoil-stricken country.

The two-day Arab summit, to kick off on Saturday, is expected to further discuss the situation in Yemen and the recent proposal by Arab foreign ministers to establish a united Arab military force for immediate interference among Arab states when necessary. Endit
