Dutch budget records same deficit in 2014 as in 2013

Xinhua, March 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

The government budget deficit of the Netherlands for 2014 was 2.3 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), the same as the year before, the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) stated on Thursday.

However, the deficit was below the 3 percent norm of the European Union for the second year in a row.

The Dutch deficit reached the highest level of this century in 2009 at 33.7 billion euros, accounting for 5.5 percent of the GDP, but since then the deficit has been reduced gradually, from 5 percent in 2010, 4.3 percent in 2011 and to 4 percent in 2012, to the current level of 2.3 percent.

The Dutch government deficit did climb to 15.0 billion euros (16.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2014, an increase of 0.4 billion euros compared to the previous year.

However, because the GDP also grew, the deficit as a percentage of the GDP did not change and remained at 2.3 percent.

Public debt, as a percentage of the GDP, also remained stable at 68.8 percent, the same as in 2013. Endit
