EU's Juncker to pay first bilateral visit to third country

Xinhua, March 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will travel to Ukraine next Monday on what will be the president's first bilateral visit to a third country since taking up office in November, the Commission announced Thursday.

Juncker and European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, followed by meetings with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Groysman, and the heads of the political groups.

Juncker has also been invited to preside the National Reform Council alongside Poroshenko, the Commission said.

The visit comes only a few days after the European Parliament on Wednesday approved the Commission's proposal for an additional 1.8 billion euros in macro-financial assistance (MFA) to Ukraine. In 2014, the Commission disbursed 1.36 billion under previous MFA programs, with the disbursement of a final tranche is expected this spring. Endit
