Teams from DPRK, Kazakhstan, Vietnam into semifinals of int'l women's volleyball cup

Four teams from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kazakhstan and Vietnam entered the semifinals of the VTV-Binh Dien International Women's Volleyball Cup on Thursday.

Specifically, DPRK's 4.25 Sports Club, Vietnam's VTV Binh Dien Long An and LienVietPostBank, and Kazakhstan's Astana beat their rivals after six days of group stage competition to secure tickets to the semifinals.

On Thursday, DPRK's 4.25 Sports Club defeated Vietnam's VTV Binh Dien Long An 3-1 to top the Group A. Losing the first set 25-23, DPRK players fought back to win other three sets 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23.

During another match on the day, China's Fujian edged Vietinbank of Vietnam 3-2. But they failed to advance with only third place in Group B.

After the group stage, in Group A, DPRK's 4.25 Sports Club recorded all four wins to stay at the first place while Vietnam's VTV Binh Dien Long An comes second with three victories and one loss.

In Group B, the defending champion LienVietPostBank of host Vietnam tops the group with all three wins and Kazakhstan's Astana claimed the second place with two wins and one loss.

The annual nine-day competition kicked off last Saturday with the participation of four leading Vietnamese teams - VTV Binh Dien Long An, LienVietPostBank, Vietinbank and Tien Nong Thanh Hoa, and five international invitees of Malaysia, DPRK's 4.25 Sports Club, China's Fujian, Kazakhstan's Astana, and Japan's Tenri University.

The nine participant teams are competing in a round robin format in two groups, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the semifinal round.
