Organized crime costs Albania 1.3 bln U.S. dollars every year

Xinhua, March 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Albania loses 1.3 billion U.S. dollars annually due to organized crime, according to a study conducted by Open Society Foundation for Albania.

The study shows that narcotics-related crimes take up 42 percent of overall organized crime.

International drug syndicates, working together with Albanian criminals, use Albania as a stop to transport drugs, and even try to build labs here, according to the study.

Artan Didi, general director of the Albanian Police Department, expressed concern over the situation.

"The law enforcement institutions should be more independent. Politicians should not be so keen in telling these institutions how the law is enforced. They should be more independent," said Didi. Endi
