Tokyo shares open sharply lower on Wall St. drops

Tokyo shares opened sharply lower Thursday as sentiment here was weighed by weak U.S. business spending data that triggered sharp declines in U.S. market.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 177.41 points, or 0.90 percent, from Wednesday to 19,568.79.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 13.83 points, or 0.87 percent, to 1, 578.18. Endi
