Bahrain carrier suspends flights to Yemen citing safety concerns

Xinhua, March 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bahrain's national carrier, Gulf Air announced on Wednesday that it will suspend its five-week flights to Yemen citing "safety and security" concerns.

The airline said in a statement that it will not fly to and from Sana'a International Airport from Thursday.

"Gulf Air is wholly committed to the safety and security of its passengers and crew and will continue to monitor and assess the security situation in and around Sana'a International Airport on a regular basis, working closely with airport and security officials in the Yemeni capital," the airline said.

The airline said it hoped to resume services to Sana'a as soon as operational conditions permitted.

Yemeni authorities have called for Arab and Gulf Cooperation Council military intervention against advancing Shiite rebels known as Houthi who seized Sana'a in September and are advancing south alongside forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Endit
