Spanish Civil Guards on Wednesday arrested four people with alleged links to Basque separatist group ETA.
Those arrested are accused of forming part of the structure known as the Co-ordination Nucleus (KG), which according to the Spanish Ministry for the Interior, is a structure "designed and led by ETA" to ensure that the diverse organizations representing ETA prisoners maintain their unity.
The Ministry confirmed that the operation was carried out in the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Alava and also in Navarre and that more arrests have not been ruled out.
The Interior Ministry said KG worked to bring together the representatives of the various prisoner support organizations.
KG is thought to have elaborated a specific protocol for each of the different prisoner support groups, ensuring the several hundred ETA prisoners being kept in Spanish jails maintain a united front in line with the group's policies and aims.
ETA declared a permanent end to its armed struggle for the Independence of the Basque Region in the north of Spain in the run up to the 2011 general elections. That brought to an end around 50 years of conflict which claimed over 800 lives. Endit
