Renowned Myanmar politician stresses necessity of ceasefire

Xinhua, March 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

A renowned Myanmar politician on Wednesday stressed the utmost importance of a domestic ceasefire in order to gain stability and development in the country.

As for the ongoing peace talks on a draft nationwide ceasefire agreement and the armed clashes in northern Myanmar, U Ko Ko Gyi, general secretary of 88-Generation Peace and Open Society Group, told Xinhua that Myanmar's domestic clashes lasted longer than his age for over six decades.

Urging parties to have perseverance and far-sightedness, he said there is no way out until a federation system guaranteeing equality of nationalities is built.

He also emphasized the importance of building mutual trust as Myanmar is a country with many ethnic nationalities.

Pointing out that although the 88-Generation Peace and Open Society Group is not directly involved in the peace talks, he said the group will actively take part in monitoring the ceasefire and political dialogue in the future.

He stressed in particular that Myanmar's peace needs assistance from neighboring countries, citing the existence of some ethnic armed groups in Myanmar-Thai and Myanmar-China border areas. Endi
