Tokyo stocks open higher on optimism over Japanese companies

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Wednesday on optimism over Japanese companies ahead of the fiscal year-end.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 40.22 points, or 0.20 percent, from Tuesday to 19,753.67. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 4.13 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,591.72.

Major gainers included real estate, precision instrument and construction issues. Endi
