The White House announced Tuesday the United States will maintain current 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through end of 2015 based on Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's request for flexibility in the U.S. drawdown timeline.

The White House previously announced it planed to reduce the number of 9,800 U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan to around 5, 500 by the end of 2015 and withdraw all troops by the end of 2016. Endite
