Assad hails Iraq, Syria in fighting against terrorism

Xinhua, March 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Tuesday the Syrian and Iraqi battles against terrorist groups have halted the terrorism expansion, according to the state news agency SANA.

"The successes achieved by the Syrian and Iraqi people as well as their military forces in face of terrorist organizations have contributed to the halt of expansion of terrorism," Assad said during his meeting with the visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

The consultations between the two countries could reinforce the successes in the battle against terrorism, Assad said, stressing the importance of having a true international will to stand against the terrorism.

For his part, al-Jaafari said that "Syria is defending the neighboring countries" against the threats of extremist groups.

Regarding the recent voices that Syria's seat in the upcoming Arab Summit should be handed over to the opposition, al-Jaafari said that the official attendance should be presented by the Syrian government in accordance to the Arab League (AL) regulations.

Syria's membership in the AL has been suspended since November 2011, as part of the AL's dismay with the government's crackdown on opposition protests.

Al-Jaafari also met with Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, who also hailed Iraq's role in fighting terrorism. Endit
