Atletico Madrid caoch Simeone signs new deal until 2020

Xinhua, March 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone on Tuesday signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2020.

The new contract ends speculation over his future and confirms his sister's comments to the press a week ago that there would be 'good news' about the coach in the near future.

The new contract means there is no chance of the Simeone moving to one of Europe's major clubs, such as Manchester City and shows that Atletico are also committed to spending big to give what Simeone wants in the transfer market.

Since replacing Gergorio Manzano at the end of 2012, Simeone has won the Europa League, the King's Cup, the BBVA Primera Liga, the Spanish and European Supercups and also took the club to within one minute of winning last season's Champions League before finally slipping to an extra time defeat to Real Madrid, who they will soon meet again in the quarter-finals of this season's competition.

One of Simeone's greatest triumphs in the eyes of Atletico fans is ending the dominance that Real had enjoyed over their neighbors for 14 years, which was the time Atletico went between beating their neighbors in 1999 to the Simeone inspired triumph over Real in the 2013 Kings Cup final, which was played in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

"This is a very important moment for the club and the technical staff. It has been a lot of work for us to achieve the stability that we have now," said Simeone.

"We are confident in the group of players we work with an we feel we have the strength to continue growing. I want to thank the club and the players, because it is due to them that it has seen possible," he commented. Endi
