Georgian troops participate in NATO-led mission in Afghanistan

Xinhua, March 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Georgia has officially committed its troops to the new NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, the Georgian Defense Ministry said Monday.

A battalion from the fourth mechanized brigade of the South Caucasus country, which went through a 13-week special training by German instructors before departing for Afghanistan, has been patrolling in the Afghan capital of Kabul since January.

The Georgian troops will serve in Afghanistan for six months, and their main task is to ensure the safety of the mission's headquarters.

The Resolute Support Mission is a new NATO-led mission to train, advice and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions. It was launched on Jan. 1, 2015, immediately following the stand-down of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Georgia has been with the NATO ISAF mission in Afghanistan since 2010 and has so far lost 29 of its troops in the country. Endi
