flu outbreak causes class suspensions in schools in southern Germany

Xinhua, March 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Flu outbreak in southern German state of Bavaria has led to many classes suspended in some schools, the Bavarian Teachers' Union (BLLV) announced on Monday, while calling for immediate help.

According to Klaus Wenzel, president of the BLLV, the situation in the districts of Niederbayern, Oberpfalz and Mittelfranken is especially serious. A number of courses have to be canceled, since there are not enough teachers because of the flu.

Wenzel reiterated that he is not exaggerating and that teachers and administrative staff in some affected schools have no idea any more, how they could provide pupils with at least one program, as many teachers have been taken ill.

Therefore, Wenzel called on the Ministry of Education to help those affected schools immediately. In his opinion, the regular school cancellations reflect the financial shortage in Bavarian schools and education.

People in Bavaria are experiencing currently the strongest flu outbreak in the last five years. Since the beginning of January, 7,565 influenza patients have been registered, according to the State Office for Health and Food Safety. Endit
