Bangladeshi police arrest banned group's militant leader

Xinhua, March 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Bangladeshi police on Monday arrested regional militant leader of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) Shibly Hossain in the country's southeastern port city of Chittagong.

"Hossain who is a regional commander of Chittagong was nabbed on Monday morning," said a Chittagong Metropolitan Police official who declined to be named.

He said the police seized a huge amount of explosive and grenade-making materials.

Bangladeshi police arrested acting militant chief of the banned JMB Anwar Alam Khokon in the country's Bogra district in July last year.

The Special Branch of Bangladesh Police had earlier arrested the JMB chief Saidur Rahman from a house in the capital after nearly a three-year manhunt. Rahman took over the JMB chieftain after the execution of former chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman in 2007.

JMB, campaigning for establishment of Islamic rule in Bangladesh, carried out a series of bombings in 63 out of the country's 64 districts, including the capital of Dhaka on Aug. 17, 2005, leaving two people dead and 150 others injured.

Hundreds of JMB leaders and activists were rounded up while six top leaders of the group, including Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were hanged in 2007. Endi
