Indonesia extends heartfelt condolence on passing of former Singapore PM

The government and the people of Indonesia on Monday expressed deep condolences on death of former Singaporean prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.

Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla expressed the mourning and delivered it to the Singaporean embassy.

"The government of Indonesia extends heartfelt condolences on the passing of Lee Kuan Yew," Kalla said at Kemayoran here.

The vice president said Lee is an Asian leader who has strong influence in the region.

On a separate occasion, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on a visit to Japan, also expressed the mourning from Tokyo, saying that he is to present at the funeral on Saturday, according to Andi Widjajanto, cabinet of secretary who is quoted by Antara news agency on Monday.

Lee passed away at 03:18 a.m. local time Monday at the age of 91 after a seven-week struggle with pneumonia. He served as the country's prime minister from 1959 to 1990. Endi
