9 killed in bus accident in Egypt's Giza

Xinhua, March 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least nine people were killed Saturday after a bus fell into a canal in Egypt's Giza governorate, south of Cairo, state-run MENA news agency reported.

A total of nine bodies have been recovered from the bus so far, while 15 others were injured and rescued, according to MENA, adding that three are in serious condition.

The bus was running on a highway when its right front tire exploded before it lost control. It then overturned and plunged into Mariottia Canal, said the report.

The passengers were all staff with a local company who were on the way to the workplace, while unconfirmed reports said that some 50 passengers were onboard.

Xinhua reporter saw that the bus was floating in the river and are badly damaged, while civil defense teams are involved in rescue operations in search of those who were still trapped or drowned.

Thousands of Egyptians get killed every year in road and vehicle-train accidents.

Experts said lack of maintenance and poor condition of roads and railway networks are to blame for the frequent accidents. Enditem
