Machete-wielding attacker shot at New Orleans airport

Xinhua, March 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

A machete-wielding man attacked security officers at an airport in the U.S. city of New Orleans Friday before being shot, authorities said.

The incident happened Friday night at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. The man, identified as 63-year-old Richard White, went through a security line where boarding passes were checked when he was confronted by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer.

White sprayed that officer with wasp spray, then struck another TSA officer with a machete, injuring the latter. He was shot several times by a third officer after a chase.

The airport later confirmed the "security incident" on its Facebook and Twitter, saying that "the site has been secured."

Some passengers who witnessed the scuffle described the scene as "chaotic."

"People had heard gunshots. Everyone was hiding behind chairs and in doorways," witness Farah Stockman, a staffer with the Boston Globe, tweeted. "Made our way to exit. Body was lying in a pool of blood."

At least one bystander was hurt in the incident. A man suffered an arm injury, reportedly grazed by a bullet fired by the officer, local official Newell Normand told the media.

The suspect was sent to an area hospital but Normand said he was "unresponsive." However, authorities have not confirmed his death. Endi
