Third French tourist probably killed in Tunis attack: Hollande

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

French President Francois Hollande on Thursday said a third French tourist was probably killed during the terrorist attack at Tunisia's national museum of Bardo.

"It's true that questions had risen over a third French person who was injured. We are working to confirm the information and I'll announce it when it is really confirmed," Hollande said.

Hollande said France was "fully committed" to provide its former colony with human and technical supports to help fight rising terrorism risks in Tunisia, once considered the most calm tourist destination in the Maghreb region.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve would meet his Tunisian counterpart in the north African state on Friday in a move to cement further security cooperation, Hollande added.

Gunmen opened fire on foreign and local visitors at Bardo museum in Tunisia's capital Tunis on Wednesday noon, killing at least 22 people, including 20 foreign tourists.

In a press release issued late on Wednesday, the French presidential office, the Elysee, confirmed two French citizens were killed and seven others were injured in the museum attack.

Bardo attack was the country's worst assault targeting foreigners since 2002 when an al-Qaeda linked suicide bomber blew himself in a synagogue in the southern island of Djerba, killing 21 tourists with many of them were German. Enditem
