India's BJP gov't appeals to opposition not to block reform

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government Thursday called on the opposition to put aside partisan prejudices and cooperate with it to achieve double digit economic growth through reform measures.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley denied opposition accusation that the BJP is pro-corporate and said the country needs high growth for creation of jobs, addressing social issues and development of infrastructure.

He was apparently referring to the conflict between the BJP government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition parties over the reform of a land acquisition law.

The opposition parties, led by the Congress, have been strongly opposing the new land acquisition bill which could make it easier for the government to obtain land from farmers for development projects,

The oppositions said the bill, which was already adopted in the lower house of Parliament, is anti-farmer and suspected of violating the country's Constitution, blocking the bill at the Upper House of Parliament in which the oppositions are majority. Endi
