1st LD Writethru: 2 dead, 8 injured in restaurant shooting in SW Sweden

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two people were shot dead in a shooting spree late Wednesday at a restaurant in Sweden's southwestern port city of Gothenburg, police said.

Beside the two fatalities, eight men were treated for gunshot wounds, three of whom were seriously injured, Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported Thursday. All of them were in their 20s.

The death toll was likely to rise. Police spokesman Peter Adlersson was quoted by local media as saying that one of the injured man was with "life-threatening injuries."

Aside from knowing that an automatic weapon was used in the shooting, the police said they do not have any suspects yet with investigation still under way.

Police spokeswoman Ulla Brehm was quoted by local media as saying that "we can't rule out that it's gang-related. We've had problems for some time with gang crime in this area."

Eyewitnesses told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that two people entered the pub in the Gothenburg suburb of Biskopsgarden late Wednesday night with "weapons that looked like Kalashnikovs," started shooting, and then fled in a car.

The restaurant involved was in a gang-troubled neighborhood in Gothenburg, the country's second largest city. Endi
