Kerry slams deadly attack on Tunisian museum

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday denounced the deadly attack on a museum in the Tunisian capital, vowing continuing support for the North African country.

"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms today's deadly terrorist attack at the National Bardo Museum in Tunis, where gunmen killed 19 people and wounded more than 20 others," the top American envoy said in a statement.

He praised the Tunisian authorities' "rapid response" and their efforts to resolve the hostage situation and restore calm.

Seventeen tourists, most of them Europeans, and two gunmen were killed in the exchange of fires between the security forces and the five militants who entered the museum through the parliament building in Tunis and took a group of tourists as hostages.

"The United States stands with the Tunisian people at this difficult time and continues to support the Tunisian government's efforts to advance a secure, prosperous and democratic Tunisia," Kerry said. Endite
