1st LD Writethru: Indian opposition parties' leaders march to protest land bill

Xinhua, March 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's opposition parties Tuesday marched to the presidential palace to protest against the land bill proposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Among the protesters were Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other opposition parties' leaders who presented a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee expressing strong opposition to the land bill.

All secular democratic forces are determined to defeat the Modi government's "design to promote divisions and social disharmony," Gandhi said in a written statement read to the media.

The land bill was passed at the BJP-dominated lower house of parliament last week. It was supposed to make it easier for the government to acquire land.

The Delhi police had earlier banned the march. Endi
