BiH to destroy 2400 tons of ammunition in 2015

Xinhua, March 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) planned to destroy some 2400 tons of surplus weapons and ammunition in 2015, said Zekerijah Osmic, BiH defense minister, here on Monday.

The country already donated some 550 tons of surplus weapons and ammunition to Iraq to fight the Islamic State (IS), he said after attending a session of Strategic Committee for Weapons, Ammunition and Explosive Ordnance.

Osmic hoped his country could get rid of surplus weapons and ammunition by 2020.

Due to the 1990s war, BiH has a large stock of excess weapons and ammunition. In the past seven to ten years, some 12,000 tons of surplus weapons were destroyed in BiH together with some 150,000 pieces of arms.

There are still around 16,000 tons of landmines and explosive ordnance as well as 40,000 pieces of various weapons. Endit
